“Oklahoma!” canters onto the stage at 7 p.m. March 31, April 1; 2 p.m. April 2 and 7 p.m. April 7 and 8, auditorium, Bethlehem Catholic High School, 2133 Madison Avenue, Bethlehem.
The Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical, based on the 1931 play, “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs, made its Broadway debut in 1943, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1944.
The setting is the 1906 Oklahoma Territory where cowboy Curly McLain’s courtship of Laurey Williams, a local farm girl, is complicated by rival suitor Jud Fry. A subplot involves McLain’s friend Will Parker and flirtatious Ado Annie.
“Oklahoma!,” produced by Bethlehem Catholic theater department chairperson Diana Tice, is directed and choreographed by Debbie Acampora. Assisting with the production are music director Joseph Fink, vocal coaches Don Nixon and Gabriel Zurek and acting coach Sean Hartman.
Popular featured songs include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,’” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “I Cain’t Say No,” “The Farmer and the Cowman” and “Oklahoma!”
Broadway revivals of the musical received two Tony Award nominations in 1980, a special 1993 Tony for the show’s 50th year, plus six Tony Award nominations with one win in 2002.
