Lowhill discusses bridge

Lowhill Township supervisors recently discussed a letter received from Lehigh County regarding the replacement of Bittners Corner Bridge.

The letter, from the office of Rick Molchany, director of general services, affirmed the county is going to replace the bridge. In addition, a temporary bridge is possible, so no one would need to enter Route 100.

The county owns the bridge, Lowhill owns the road, and Route 100 is owned by PennDOT.

“If they do what they say they’re going to do, we shouldn’t have anything to do with it (the traffic issues) at this point,” Chairperson Rick Hughes said at the March 2 meeting. “It appears how they are going to combat that is put up a temporary bridge.”

Bear Bridge, was also a topic of conversation.

The township had initially planned to repair the bridge at a cost of approximately $75,000.

According to township engineer Chris Noll, the state Department of Environmental Protection requires further studies by a survey crew to determine the water flow volume prior to moving forward.

Supervisors agreed Supervisor Robb Werley will head a committee seeking the support of state Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, to provide some relief from DEP regulations.
