Kempton teen killed in Lynn Twp crash

A Kempton teen was killed when her 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 struck a utility pole and rolled over around 5 a.m. March 18 on Route 143, Lynn Township.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said Kaci Mackenzie Kunkel, 18, of 99280 Kistler Valley Road, Kempton, was pronounced dead at 7:15 a.m. at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl.

Grim said the cause of her death was multiple blunt force injuries.

He ruled the manner of her death as an accident.

According to State police Troop M Fogelsville, Route 143 is a two-lane black asphalt highway divided by a painted solid yellow double line divider.

Streetlights and other sources of ambient lighting is not prevalent in the area of this crash.

Police say at the time of the crash, it was lightly snowing and the roadway was wet, but there was no standing water or ice present.

Snow was present on the berms and mounds of snow on both north and south of the roadway.

Police say Kunkel was traveling westbound on Route 143, where toward the crash site, the roadway is straight and has a downward slope.

Traffic control signs with a properly posted speed limit of 45 mph are present along the side of the roadway.

According to police, Kunkel’s truck was in the westbound lane, when it traveled onto the north berm of the westbound lane for approximately 122 feet.

The truck began to spin clockwise, left the berm, and hit a mound of snow with its front end before traveling approximately 3 feet, 3 inches on the north roadside where it hit a mailbox, police say.

The truck then traveled west approximately 39 feet where it struck a utility pole with the front, driver’s side door before overturning and traveling approximately 12 feet to the point of final rest on its roof facing west.

Live power lines and the severed utility pole were in the roadway, police say.

Cetronia Ambulance Corps, and New Tripoli, Kempton and Lynnport fire companies, along with Met-Ed, Stew’s Towing and State Police Troop M’s Forensic Service Unit assisted at the scene.
