LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Scholarship contest underway

BHCWA

The Bertsch, Hokendauqua, Catasauqua Watershed Association, founded to promote the stewardship, protection, enhancement and restoration of the tributaries to the Lehigh River in the watershed, is sponsoring a scholarship contest.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the winning entry.

The contest is open to college-bound high school seniors within the boundaries of the watershed and the Northampton or Catasauqua area school districts. The requirement is an essay approximately 750 words, to be judged on content, topic development, grammar and spelling.

The essay should include a definition and description of the different trophic levels in the aquatic food chain of a Pennsylvania stream. It should explain the concept of “indicator species” and how those species relate to the overall health of an aquatic ecosystem. Examples of how human activities affect the various levels of the food chain in a freshwater ecosystem also should be included.

Request an application at lmb19@psu.edu. Send the essay and completed application by April 15 to BHCWA Scholarship Contest, 3870 Kreidersville Road, Northampton, 18067.
