LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN Magic, illusion show set for March 18

The Lower Macungie Library will be closed April 14 for a spring holiday.

The library is now accepting book donations for the spring 2017 book sale at the donations counter to the left of the information desk. Acceptable donations include gently used books, DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks on CDs. Unacceptable items include damaged, dirty or incomplete items, magazines, newspapers, textbooks, encyclopedias and Reader’s Digest condensed books.

There will be a LEAP into Science Family Night 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 27 featuring the theme Air is Everywhere. The program is for children ages four to 11 with their caregivers. The Library Explorers will meet as part of the Family Night. Registration is encouraged.

Library League – a monthly program for students in grades three to five – meets 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 20. The programs include a story, exploration and problem solving.

There will be a family story time for children of all ages 6:30 to 7 p.m. April 3.

Creation Station will meet 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 8. Creation Station is in the children’s area and offers supplies for a special craft or activity as well as books with ideas that support the monthly theme.

There will be a Chat and Chew book discussion group for students in grades four to eight 4:15 p.m. March 21 to discuss “Tales of Desperaux” by Kate DiCamillo. The next Chat and Chew will meet 4:15 p.m. April 25 to discuss “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. Enrollment is limited to 15 students and advanced registration is required.

There will be an Afterschool Adventures program for children in grades kindergarten through fifth 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. March 28. The theme for March is the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, celebrating “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” There will be a read-aloud, a craft, games, and cookies and lemonade.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. April 5 to discuss “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman. The book for May 3 is “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan.

The library now offers Rosetta Stone Library Solution which includes access to 30 languages. Mobile apps are also available.

New at the library are Museum Passes for Allentown Art Museum, America on Wheels and the Liberty Bell Museum.

The library offers “Book a Librarian” services for one-on-one help with using eReaders, downloading eBooks, tablets or computer programs such as Excel and Microsoft Word.

The Friends of the Library will have their next meeting 10 a.m. March 18 in the library. The Friends sort used books 8:30 to 10 a.m. every Thursday morning. Volunteers are welcome.

The book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 5 and 6 with a bag sale 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 6. Member preview night will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 4. Anyone can become a Friends member at the door to attend preview night. All proceeds benefit the library.

There will be a magic and illusion show with Tom Yurasits 2 to 2:45 p.m. March 18 at the Lower Macungie Community Center.

Concordia Lutheran Church, 2623 Brookside Road, will hold Lenten worship services 7 p.m. Wednesday evenings March 15, 22 and 29 and April 5. There will be a Lenten supper 6 p.m. prior to the service. For information, call the church at 610-966-3265.

Eyer Middle School will present “High School Musical, Jr.” March 23, 24 and 25.

Lower Macungie Middle School will present the musical “Me and My Girl” March 30, 31 and April 1.

The Lower Macungie Firefighters Women’s Association will hold a purse bingo 1 p.m. April 2 at the Lower Macungie Fire Department on Brookside Road. Summer playground signups will take place 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 19 at the community center. The program runs June 26 to Aug. 11 for children ages six to 11 years old.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will hold a Earth Day Clothes Recycling Event 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22 at Concordia Lutheran Church. Acceptable items for the clothing drive include new and gently used clothing, shoes, coats, bedding, towels and stuffed animals. Tax donation receipts are available. There will be family friendly Earth Day activities 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as well as a child identification program and food. For more information, call the church at 610-965-3265.

Habitat Lehigh Valley ReStore will have a truck available at the community center to collect unwanted but new and gently used furniture, appliances and building supplies for resale 9 a.m. to noon April 22.

Registration for Lower Macungie Township Pool swim lessons can be made by contacting the community center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday after April 3. There will not be a designated night for sign-ups.

The Lower Macungie “Lazers” Swim Team signups will be held 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 at the community center. The season runs May 30 to July 22 and a Lower Macungie Township Pool membership is required.

Lower Macungie offers garden plot rentals on Bogie Avenue and at Camp Olympic. Those who rented plots last year can now renew their plot rental for 2017. Plots are available to rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact the community center for more information.

AARP will offer two sessions of Safe Driving for Mature Drivers: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 28 and 30; and 5 to 9 p.m. April 25 and 27. AARP will also offer a refresher class for safe drivers 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 11 or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 11.

There will be a free document shredding event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6. Each family can shred up to four boxes per household. The event is sponsored by state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, and Lower Macungie Township.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon March 20 and April 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The community center offers programs for the winter which include Latin partner dance classes, Zumba, guided meditation/relaxation, Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, card making classes, Pilates and Cize Live. Children’s programs include Kindermusik, Toddlers and Tutus and Soccer-Mommy/Daddy and Me.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are now required for drop-off. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
