STATE WRESTLING UPDATE Hawks advance ten to Day 2

Bethlehem Catholic’s Mikey Labriola and Northampton’s Julian Chlebove both continued their treks to a second straight state championship Thursday night during the opening round of the PIAA 3A wrestling tournament.

Labriola won his opening bout by fall over Britain Shields of Big Spring with a fall in :34 seconds.

Labriola is one of four Hawks heading to Friday’s quarterfinals, as Ryan Anderson (126), Jarred Papcsy (132) and Niko Camacho (HWT) look to move through the bracket.

Chlebove (120) scored a 7-0 decision over Boyertown’s Logan Macri to advance, as teammates KJ Fenstermacher (132) and Dan Moran (138) also advanced to the quarters.

Parkland’s Zach Ortman (138) had one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, knocking off the state’s second-ranked Luke Kemerer of Hempfield 8-3 in the first round. Fellow teammate Nate Feyrer (220) also finished day one unbeaten, giving the Trojans two quarterfinalists.

Liberty’s Luke Werner (120) is the only Hurricane to advance to the quarters, as he posted a 17-1 technical fall over Wilson’s Brandon Conner in the opening round.

Freedom’s pair of Ryan DeLoach (182) and Evan Callahan (220) lost their opening round bouts, as Callahan was pinned by Upper St. Clair’s Jake Slinger in 3:31 in the first round. Both will battle in the consolation rounds Friday.

Emmaus’ Reed Custer list both of his bouts and was eliminated on day one.

Other wrestlers that stayed alive on Thursday included: Bethlehem Catholic-Kenny Herrmann (113); Zach Glenn (120); Luca Frinzi (138); Luke Carty (145); Ryan Zeiner (152) and Jody Crouse (195).

Liberty - Gunner Anglovich (170) and Damen Moyer (182).

Northampton - Sam Hanley (106) and Cade Moisey (170).
