UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN Emmaus Lions host ‘Nite at the Races’ March 11

There is still time to get tickets to enjoy a “Nite at the Races” and basket raffle March 11 at the Alburtis Area Community Center, 220 W. 2nd St., Alburtis. This fun event is sponsored by the Emmaus Lions Club. Doors open 5 p.m. and the first race runs 6:30 p.m.

Your donation buys you a fun evening of races, food, wine, beer, coffee and soda and door prizes. The food includes, meatballs, hot roast beef, sausage sandwiches, broasted chicken, a variety of salads, snacks and desserts.

Tickets are available at Buss Paints in Emmaus or the Alburtis Area Community Center. For more information, contact Lion Henry Heil at 610-966-5220 or any member of the Emmaus Lions Club. The snow date is March 12, with doors opening 1 p.m. Seating is limited, so get your tickets now.

St. Peter’s Union Church will hold its annual spring bazaar 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 1 (no fooling!). There will be raffles, sandwiches, chicken pot pie, baked goods, craft and vendor tables and more. Soups can be ordered in advance for pick-up that day. Soups available are chicken pot pie, chili and chicken corn noodle soup. The Upper Milford Historical Society will meet 7 p.m. March 30, at the Upper Milford Township building in Old Zionsville. Doug Peters is the featured speaker, talking about the importance of the Perkiomen Railroad in the development of Upper Milford villages.

The society meets 7 p.m. the last Thursday of the month except for November and December. The July meeting, which will be the annual picnic, begins 6 p.m.

The Upper Milford Youth Association is hosting a free preseason softball skill clinic 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 4 and 11 at Elite Sports Academy. This is open to all pony and pixie players registered for UMYA softball spring 2017, so if you haven’t already registered, go to UMYA.org. Space is limited on the pixie (ages six to eight coach pitch) and pony teams (ages nine and 10 kid pitch), so register now. There will be experienced coaches and players to train your daughter in catching, hitting, fielding and pitching (pony only).

To register for the event, email UMYA softball@gmail.com with your daughter’s name. If your daughter is registered for the pony division, also note if she has interest in pitching or catching specifically.

Girls will need gloves, sneakers and water. If they have their own bat and helmet they can bring those along as well. Please note if ESA is closed due to inclement weather, the event will not be rescheduled.

UMYA spring sports registrations are still open but will be closing March 15. After March 15, registrations will only be accepted if there are roster spots available and will be subject to a late fee or fine. The following sports are still open for spring registration: baseball, softball, T-ball, soccer and spring soccer. Register now at www.umya.org. Lent begins tonight, March 1, and many local churches have scheduled special services for this holy season.

Old Zionsville United Church of Christ will also be holding joint Lenten services with neighboring churches on Thursday nights, with soup 6:30 p.m. and the service 7:30 p.m. On March 9, the service will be at Upper Milford Mennonite Church; March 16, the service will be at Zions Lutheran Church. The March 23 service will be at Hosensack Evangelical Church and Old Zionsville UCC will host the March 30 service.

Old Zionsville UCC is also holding a chicken pot pie dinner 4 to 7 p.m. March 11 and an all-you-can-eat breakfast 7 to 11 a.m. March 18.

The Western District Fire Company will serve an all-you-can-eat breakfast 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 5 and April 2. There are senior, adult and children’s prices. For information on the breakfasts, call the fire company at 610-966-3541 or Carol Shade at 610-966-3902.

The Upper Milford Fire Company’s ladies auxiliary will meet 7 p.m. March 6. New members are always welcome.

Vera Cruz senior citizens will meet 1 p.m. March 2 and 16 at the Vera Cruz Fire Company. All are welcome.

Lower Milford Township supervisors have changed their meeting schedule. They now meet the first and third Thursdays of the month, beginning 7:30 p.m. The first meeting, March 2 this month, is a workshop and the second meeting, March 16, is the regular business meeting. Action may be taken at both meetings.

Other Lower Milford meetings are as follows; unless otherwise noted, they will begin 7:30 p.m.; planning commission, March 6; workshop, March 20; recreation and open space board, March 8; historical commission, March 14.

Upper Milford supervisors will meet 7 p.m. March 2 and March 16.

The Upper Milford Open Space Committee meets 7:30 p.m. March 8. The Upper Milford Recreation Commission meets 7:30 p.m. March 20.

The Upper Milford Planning Commission meets 7:30 p.m. the Monday prior to the first Thursday of every month unless that is a holiday.

The Joint Environmental Advisory Council meets 7 p.m. March 27 in Upper Milford.

The quarterly meeting of the Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society will be held 7 p.m. March 28 in the Upper Milford Township Building, 5671 Chestnut St., Old Zionsville. After a short business meeting, Mark McKenzie will present a discussion and demonstration on Internet-based genealogy research. Refreshments will be served. Guests are always welcome.
