District Basketball roundup: Iorio carries Parkland past Mounties

District 11 basketball quarterfinals wrapped up on Saturday with Lehigh Valley Press area teams competing in boys Class 6A and 3A games.

Here’s a look at the results and next round match ups in both brackets.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Class 6A

Sam Iorio scored 39 points to lead No. 4 seed Parkland to a 63-54 win over No. 5 Stroudsburg.

The senior scored 18 points in a decisive fourth quarter as the teams were tied 43-43 heading into the final eight minutes. Iorio kept his career alive for at least three more games as he scored all but two of Parkland’s points in the final frame and went 6-for-8 from the foul line the fourth quarter.

Jake Bartholomew added nine points for Parkland and Michael Zeky had eight points.

Tyler Henry had a team-high 15 points for the Mountaineers, while Dyony Bueno chipped in with 11 points and Nick Walter scored 10.

Parkland moves on to a District 11 Class 6A semifinal match up against top-seeded Allen Wednesday at 7:30 at the PPL Center. The Canaries beat No. 8 Easton 59-43 in Saturday’s semifinals.

The win also clinches a state playoff berth for the Trojans as the top four teams in Class 6A go to states.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Emmaus beat No. 7 Freedom 63-57 on Saturday to earn a semifinal match up against No. 3 Pocono Mountain West, which beat No. 6 Liberty 76-68. The Hornets will take on the Panthers at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the PPL Center.

Class 3A

No. 4 Catasauqua beat No. 5 Pine Grove 7-0-50 to advance to the semifinals in the District 1/11 subregional tournament.

The Rough Riders will travel to Valley Forge Military Academy on Wednesday to take on the top-seeded Trojans in their home gym. Valley Forge had a bye into the semifinals.

On the other side of the Class 3A bracket, No. 2 Notre Dame (Green Pond) earned a bye into the semifinals where it will meet No. 3 New Hope-Solebury, which beat No. 6 Minersville 54-44 in Saturday’s quarterfinal game.
