To the Editor:
In response to the brave and angry letter of Regina Clark in last week’s East Penn Press, I heard you, Regina, and I support you. Senator Toomey is currently very comfortable with the extreme picks of Trump and why not?
Although Senator Toomey squeaked by in his two senatorial elections, for the next five years he can cruise. He can’t be bothered with the concerns of his constituents.
However, a powerful beast has been unleashed within the public. He will be hunted. A resist movement has begun that won’t be silenced, won’t be put off. Tuesdays with Toomey passionately continues at his Allentown office.
Prior to the 2010 election, Karl Rove made it his mission to gerrymander every state he could. He was so successful that a blue state like PA would, in 2016, elect an unfit candidate like Donald Trump.
What has been done needs to be undone.
Gerrymandering has made a moderate Republican like Charlie Dent unbeatable. An average representative like Ryan Mackenzie controls his portion of the seventh district, a district that looks like ripped sheets.
I would urge those who are concerned to get involved with the League of Women Voters.
The answer is to redistrict the districts. PA Senator Lisa Boscola, has sponsored House Bill 1835 and Senator Pat Browne has sponsored Senate Bill 484 to enable FAIR DISTRICTS PA. It is incumbent on our citizenry as a whole to bring pressure on all of our state representatives to support these bills.
As Americans, we want our elections to be fair, our votes to count and our voices to be heard.
In 1989, President Reagan said, ”Gerrymandering - The practice of rigging the boundaries of congressional districts is the greatest single blot on the integrity of our nation’s electoral system, and it’s high time we did something about it.”
