Varsity Roundup: Golden Hawk wrestlers earn grudge match with Nazareth at state championships
BOYS BASKETBALL
East Stroudsburg North-Emmaus
The No. 8 seed Timberwolves knocked off top-seeded Emmaus 52-49 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinal.
Arian Azemi led East Stroudsburg North with a game-high 21 points.
Emmaus’ David Kachelries scored 17 points, while teammate Zach Sabol added 10 points.
The Timberwolves will move on to face No. 4 seed Bethlehem Catholic in Tuesday’s semifinals. The Hawks defeated Whitehall in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Allen, the No. 2 seed will face No. 3 Pocono Mountain West in Tuesday’s other semifinal. Allen advanced with a win over Stroudsburg Friday, while the Panthers beat visiting Parkland in a quarterfinal match up.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pocono Mountain East-Parkland
The Trojans beat Pocono Mountain East 44-28 in an EPC quarterfinal playoff game.
Julia Buchman scored a game-high 15 points for Parkland and Rachel Medlar added 10 for the No. 4 seed Trojans.
Khyasia Caldwell had a team-high 12 points for the Cardinals.
Parkland moves on to play top-seeded Bethlehem Catholic in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Hawks beat No. 8 Freedom in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Northampton-Nazareth
The Blue Eagles beat Northampton 44-42 in an EPC quarterfinal.
Nazareth’s Tessa Brugler made a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds left to seal the win. Brugler had a team-high 14 points in the game. Teammate Jessica Durnin added 13 points for the No. 3 seed Eagles.
Northampton’s Brielle Rigo scored a game-high 17, including five three-pointers.
Nazareth advances to face No. 2 seed Easton Wednesday. The Rovers cruised to a win over Stroudsburg Friday as all four of the top seeds advanced in the EPC girls tournament.
WRESTLING
Bethlehem Catholic at PIAA Team Tournament
The Golden Hawks advanced to the championship final with a pair of wins on Friday. They will meet District 11 champ Nazareth Saturday with the state team title on the line.
Bethlehem Catholic beat Central Mountain in Thursday’s first round, 49-6. The Hawks dispatched of Kiski Area 38-18 in the quarterfinals and topped North Allegheny 50-23 in the semifinals to earn a grudge match against the Blue Eagles, which they beat in the league tournament but lost to in last week’s district final.
SWIMMING
Easton-Freedom
The Patriots and Red Rovers tied 93-93 in the girls meet, while Freedom edged Easton 96-84 in the boys meet.
Event winners for Freedom girls were Erin Madden (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Reilly Ward (individual medley, breaststroke), Fallon Tatlow (diving), Rileigh Ellis (100 freestyle), the 200 medley relay (Linda Mao, Reilly Ward, Sage Hillier, Rileigh Ellis), the 200 freestyle relay (Sydney Straka, Emily Justice, Reilly Ward, Erin Madden) and the 400 freestyle relay (Sydney Straka, Sage Hillier, Rileigh Ellis, Erin Madden).
Freedom’s boys won six individual events and one relay. Patriot winners were Tyler Higgins (200 freestyle, backstroke), Al Bell (50 freestyle, breaststroke), Brian Seitz (100 freestyle), Colin Burnette (butterfly) and the 400 freestyle relay (Brian Seitz, Tyler Higgins, Troy Waltington, Al Bell).
