BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NW girls, Salisbury boys advance in Colonial League playoffs

The Colonial League basketball playoffs got underway Saturday. While the top two seeds in boys and girls had byes into the semifinals, four quarterfinal games were contested Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Colonial League Playoffs

Moravian Academy-Salisbury

The No. 3 seed Falcons beat No. 6 Moravian Academy 65-54 in their Colonial League quartefinal game.

Salisbury had three players score 11 points or more with Jaxon Costello (21 points) and Ryan Slutsky (19 points) leading the way, while Jack Reichenbach (12 points) and Blake Jones (11 points) also contributed to the offense.

Salisbury made 15 of 17 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Jones made six of six in the quarter and all nine of his foul shots in the game. Costello went 5-for-5 from the line in the fourth quarter and 7-for-8 in the game.

Salisbury goes on to face No. 2 seed Southern Lehigh in the league semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Catasauqua High School.

Top-seeded Bangor will take on No. 4 Notre Dame (Green Pond) in the other semifinal game Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Catty. The Crusaders beat Saucon Valley 72-63 Saturday to earn a shot at Slaters, which are 17-0 in league play and two-time defending league champs.

Bangor and Southern Lehigh had first-round byes in the league tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Colonial League Playoffs

Northwestern-Moravian Academy

The No. 5 seed Tigers beat Moravian Academy 52-32 to advance to Tuesday’s Colonial League semifinals.

Northwestern’s Lehighanna Lister scored a game-high 19 points for the Tigers. Abby Chisdak scored a 17 points, including a 8-for-8 effort at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers led 30-21 heading into the final period. They went 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Northwestern moves on to face the defending league champ and this year’s top seed in Southern Lehigh, which is 18-0 in league play this season. That game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Catasauqua High School.

Salisbury-Bangor

The No. 3 seed Slaters edged No. 6 Salisbury 39-38.

Olivia Groller led a balanced Bangor offense with eight points.

Salisbury’s Alicia Burkhardt scored a game-high 12 points.

The Slaters advance to face No. 2 Notre Dame (Green Pond) in Tuesday’s semifinals. That game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. at Catasauqua High School.
