Varsity Roundup: Golden Hawks upset Canaries in OT

In the finals basketball games of the 2016-17 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference season, Bethlehem Catholic knocked off Allen, the state’s top ranked team, while several other games were contested on the league’s final night before Friday’s playoffs begin.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bethlehem Catholic-Allen

The Golden Hawks handed the state’s top-ranked team its first loss of the season, 68-56 in overtime.

Justin Paz scored a game-high 28 points in the win, while teammates Ryan Young (15 points) and William Melson (16 points) also reached double digits.

Allen was let by Tyrese Martin with 17 points. Talek Williams added 14 points for the Canaries.

Northampton-Parkland

The Trojans beat Northampton 59-47.

Jake Bartholomew led all scorers with 30 points on eight three-pointers, a field goal and a 4-for-5 effort from the foul line. Sam Iorio chipped in 12 points in the win.

Northampton was led by Aidan Ellwood with 28 points.

Dieruff at Liberty

The Hurricanes beat Dieruff 70-61.

Alex Serrano poured in a game-high 27 points for Liberty, while teammate Jeremy Johnson scored 23 points and Cameron Hoffman chipped in with 12 points.

Dieruff was led by Justin Rockmore with 19 points.

Freedom-Easton

The Patriots beat the Rovers 54-39.

Freedom placed three scorers in double digits as Tyler Muniz scored a game-high 15 points, while Nicholas King added 13 points and Lewis Hargett chipped in with 12 points.

Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg)-Catasauqua

The Spartans beat Catasauqua 71-62.

Notre Dame placed four players in double figures with Sacharon Killpatrick pouring in a game-high 16 points.

Isaiah Graves led Catty with 22 points. Jaylen Green added 13 for the Rough Riders.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whitehall-Emmaus

The Zephyrs beat the Hornets 49-41.

Brianna Smith led a balanced Whitehall offense with 10 points. Alix Buskirk and Ariana Hines had nine points each while Kylee Cunningham scored seven points. Seven Zephyrs scored four points or more in the game.

Emmaus was led by Briana Hart with 13 points.

Allen-Bethlehem Catholic

The Golden Hawks beat Allen 64-25.

Taliyah Medina led a balances Bethlehem Catholic offense with 13 points. Natalie Rhine and Morgan Orloski had 10 points apiece and Hope Brown chipped in with nine points. Six Hawks had seven points or more in the game.

Kion Andrews led Allen with nine points.

SWIMMING

Whitehall-Parkland

The Trojans swept Whitehall, winning the boys meet 137-43 and taking the boys meet 129-50.

Event winners for the Parkland girls team were Nicole Nesland (200 freestyle), Megan Sicinski (individual medley, 500 freestyle), Zoe Sheridan (50 freestyle), Serena Johnson (diving), Lauren Ceh (100 freestyle), Coutrney Sicinski (breaststroke), the medley relay (Abigail Sheridan, Megan Sicinski, Courtney Sicinski, Grace Kennedy), the 200 freestyle relay (Nicole Nesland, Zoe Sheridan, Megan Sicinski, Lauren Ceh) and the 400 freestyle relay (Nicol Nesland, Abigail Sheridan, Zoe Sheridan, Courtney Sicinksi).

Parkland boys winners included Matthew Ceh (200 freestyle), James Zhang (IM), Christopher Lehman (diving), Mathew Engler (butterfly, backstroke), James Connolly (500 freestyle, breaststroke), the medley relay (Hyunbin Kim, James Connolly, Mathew Engler, Charles Villano), the 200 freestyle relay (Charles Villano, James Zhang, Kim Hyunbin Kim, Adam Kucharczuk) and the 400 freestyle relay (James Zhang, James Connolly, Mathew Engler, Matthew Ceh).

Whitehall’s Stephanie Setar (backstroke) was the only event winner for the Zephyr girls, while Jordan Rivera (50 freestyle) and Daniel Jablonski (100 freestyle) picked up one win each for the Whitehall boys team.

Southern Lehigh-Salisbury

The Spartans swept Salisbury, winning the girls meet 111-61 and taking the boys meet 114-61.

Salisbury girls event winners were Sarah Bobeck (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Madaket Chassard (individual medley), the 200 freestyle relay (Madison Jewell, Madaket Chassard, Sarah Bobeck, Brooke Rogers) and the 400 freestyle relay (Sarah Bobeck, Madison Jewell, Madaket Chassard, Brooke Rogers).

First place winners from the Salisbury boys team include Mahlon Reihman (IM, 100 freestyle) Tyler Keller (diving), and Ben Wiener (500 freestyle)
