Salisbury swimmers swept by Mounties

The District 11 swimming and diving championships are only a few of weeks away. And while that meet is quickly approaching, there is still some regular season swimming left for the Salisbury boys and girls.

February kicked off with the Falcons’ most recent meet against Stroudsburg, one in which the boys (48-45) and girls (57-37) both came up short. But Salisbury will have one more regular season meet-Wednesday against Southern Lehigh-and a trip to Emmaus’ Last Chance Meet on February 18, just over a week to qualify for districts.

“I’m looking for some great swims by our top swimmers as they are looking towards getting some good seed times for districts,” Salisbury head coach Patrick O’Connor said. “Then there are some other swimmers who are simply trying to qualify for districts, and this meet is their last dual meet to try to qualify before the Last Chance Meet. So [there are] lots of different goals at this time of the season.”

O’Connor wasn’t particularly pleased with his team’s performance against Stroudsburg, a team he believes both the boys and girls could have came out on top against.

The boys won nine of the events, but a mental miscue cost them a chance at a victory. The girls won two relay events, and Sarah Bobeck (100-yard butterfly, 200-yard individual medley) was the only female to win an individual event against Stroudsburg.

“I was not happy with either team’s performance,” O’Connor said. “We had a disqualification that was a mental error and that lost us the boys meet.”

A number of boys took home first in individual events last week: Ben Wiener (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Mahlon Reihman (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke), Tim Sechler-Stone (100-yard butterfly), Aiden Cary (100-yard freestyle) and AJ Oliver (100-yard backstroke).

However, while the result ended up with a loss in the record column, O’Connor and his staff are focused on one last haul in qualifying some additional Falcons for postseason swimming. A number have already qualified for the trip to Parkland High School, where districts will be held on March 3 and 4, but Salisbury is hoping a couple of more will make the ride as well. The District 11 diving championships will be held on February 25 at Emmaus, where Tyler Keller will look to grab some hardware.

“On the plus side, we are training long and hard right now and I’m not expecting personal bests,” O’Connor said. “But I don’t want that to be an excuse for not winning or giving 100 percent.

“We will primarily be looking to transition from building on our yardage and efforts, to reducing our yardage and increasing our efforts and rest at practice in order to get to the point where we will be razor sharp for districts and states.”
