Emmaus VFW suspended by headquarters

A sign on the door of the Emmaus Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 316 Main St., Emmaus, states it has closed its doors.

“This Post has been placed under suspension by the PA VFW Headquarters and is closed until further notice.”

According to its Facebook page, the VFW is a private social club welcoming active (military and veterans) and social members.

A performance of “JumpStart Duo” was planned 8 p.m. Jan. 28.

Additional events planned include a Superbowl party 6 p.m. Feb. 5 and a performance of the Steel Creek Band 8 p.m. Feb. 10.

The state organization shut down the Emmaus location in April 2012 stating the organization was not following VFW rules and regulations.

The Emmaus veterans group then filed a lawsuit in Lehigh County to get back into the building.

John Getz, adjutant, PA VFW Headquarters spoke with The Press Jan. 30.

He said the Emmaus post was suspended for “not operating according to the bylaws.”

Getz said a meeting will be held for members only Feb. 15.

In an email reply from VFW National Headquarters in Missouri, Zach Schwenk, associate director, administrative operations Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, wrote, “Our records show Post 7088 is in good standing.”

Calls to the Emmaus Post were unanswered by press time.
