Red beets eggs and green salad complemented the chicken potpie dinner at Heidelberg Union Church.

Even with snow on the ground and falling from the sky, there was a feeling of warmth and camaraderie inside the church’s fellowship hall during the Jan. 14 meal.

Between seatings, the church volunteers took turns eating their own meals.

There were baskets of bread and scoops of butter that looked like vanilla ice cream in dishes on each table.

Coffee, tea or water were available as well as three choices for dessert.

Many of those who came for dinner brought along family members, in one instance one man came from as far away as New Jersey.

Glenn Roth, an emergency management coordinator at his New Jersey home and a Metzger family cousin, comes from the nearby state not only for potpie but for many other events in the Northwestern community.

The dinner tickets had raffle tickets attached that could be filled out and placed in a jar on the piano. The winning prize was two free dinners.

Before the evening ended, servers were inviting people to return for the March 11 pork and sauerkraut dinner at the church.
