Kempton Lions Club community projects continue in 2017, new members welcome

For those who have made a new year’s resolution to become more involved in their community and to volunteer their time and talents in 2017, the Kempton Lions Club may be just what you are looking for.

Chartered by Lions Clubs International, the local club serves the Kempton area and the world at large under the Lions motto of “We Serve.”

The Kempton Lions Club was formed in 1971. Club members have fun and work to support a wide variety of charitable causes, with all funds raised by the club going to charity.

The KLC meets twice a month, on the first and third Wednesday at 7 p.m. for dinner and a business meeting in the second-floor dining room at C.J. Hummel’s Restaurant, 28 Willow St., Lenhartsville.

Members of the community interested in learning more about the work done by the Kempton Lions Club may contact KLC President Mark Wyncoll at 484-809-4022 or markwync@gmail.com.

If interested in joining, attend one of the meetings on the first or third Wednesday to learn more.

Current projects include:

·Lending Medical Equipment for no fee:

The club maintains an inventory of used medical equipment and can loan items such as walkers, crutches, canes, wheelchairs, hospital beds, toilet seats and even a lift chair and a power chair.

Contact any club member for information. Donations of equipment in serviceable condition would be welcomed.

·Leaser Lake Accessibility Project: At a recent Lions Club District 14-P convention, Lion Tom Kerr made a presentation about KLC’s successful project to fund, design, and install an accessible fishing pier and an accessible kayak launcher at Leaser Lake.

Partnering with the Leaser Lake Heritage Foundation, KLC raised $57,000 for this unusual project.

The launcher allows a person with limited mobility to move safely between a wheelchair and a kayak. Designed and built in Topton by Board Safe, the unit is a model for accessible recreation equipment.

A video demonstrating the unit, produced by the manufacturer for the Lions Club and distributed world-wide, may be seen on YouTube (youtube.com/watch?v=EiYfsKxATCc).

Since the dedication of the Leaser Lake Accessible Recreation Area in 2015, those with disabilities can often be seen using the facilities.

At the conclusion of his convention presentation, Kerr was made a Melvin Jones Fellow and received the Lions Clubs International president’s Certification of Appreciation, both in recognition of his role in helping to fulfill the mission of Lions Clubs International.

·Partnering with the Kempton Community Center: In addition to the Kempton Lions Club’s many other charitable projects, the club supports the Kempton Community Center. Club members cook and serve hot dogs and delicious cheesesteaks and organize and sponsor activities at various KCC events.

Recently the club made a large cash contribution to help the center in its effort to replace the roof on the historic Stump/Geisinger barn on the property, which will be used for public events.
