Sammy celebrates second year at Stephens Funeral Home

Just in time for the holidays, Stephens Funeral Home, Upper Macungie Township, asked members of the community to join them in helping less-fortunate furry friends in the Lehigh Valley.

During “A Time for Giving Thanks,” which took place through Dec. 16, the funeral home accepted donations of pet food, treats, blankets or money for Peaceable Kingdom, Whitehall, in honor of Sammy, the funeral home’s comfort dog.

Sammy, a golden retriever, recently celebrated his two-year anniversary in the Stephens household.

His presence, as he quietly roams the rooms and halls, has a calming effect on those attending funerals.

“He has just been a wonderful addition to our family,” said Matthew Stephens, director of the funeral home. “He has a very calming presence.”

Sammy seems to have been born for his role as a loving family member, comforter and healer.

According to information provided by the funeral home, “As dogs so unselfishly do, Sammy has provided support and comfort to so many members of the community in the past year as they have coped with the loss of friends and loved ones.”

In addition to “A Time for Giving Thanks,” Stephens Funeral Home, to support the community, teamed with Hearts of Hope for a Painting with a Purpose painting party.

At these parties, attendees paint small clay hearts and write messages of hope to be given to others to help them heal.

The funeral home also has an annual Veterans Day service to which the community is invited.
