Zoning ordinance amendments approved for beekeeping

Several updates to the Salisbury Township Zoning Ordinance have been approved.

The Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners voted 4-0, with one commissioner absent, at the Dec. 8 meeting to approve the zoning ordinance amendments. The vote came after a public hearing prior to the regular meeting.

Commissioner Vice President Robert Martucci Jr. made the motion, seconded by Commissioner Joanne Ackerman, to vote on the amendments.

“This started back in 2015,” Township Manager Randy Soriano explained concerning the amendments. “It started with the beekeeping and then a review of the ordinance.”

Soriano read the portions of the ordinance changed or added. After his 10-minute review, there were no questions from commissioners or members of the audience.

The additions and changes to the township zoning ordinance approved by commissioners, which are effective immediately, are:

Permitted Uses by District: Beekeeping is permitted as an accessory use provided it is on a noncommercial basis. Hives shall be located in the rear yard at least 10 feet from any lot line and not closer than 50 feet to the nearest dwelling other than that of the property owner. Any beekeeper shall provide documentation of registration with the Department of Agriculture and compliance with the Pennsylvania Bee Law.

Table of Lot and Setback Requirements by District: In the C1 District, the rear yard set back is 35 feet and, for any yard adjacent to a public street, 30 feet.

Additional Requirements for Accessory Uses: Maximum of two accessory buildings per lot in a residential district with one acre or less.

Freestanding, Wall and Window Signs: The permit fee will be equal to the current fee for commercial zoning permits.

Signs on Mobile Stands: A temporary sign shall need a commercial zoning permit and provide the required fee associated with commercial zoning permit which shall state the dates during which the sign may be displayed. The applicant shall submit to the township the current fee for a commercial zoning permit for signage.
