The 2016-17 winter sports season got underway Friday night. Here’s a look at how some teams fared in their season-opening games.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whitehall-Northwestern

Olivia George and Taylor Rummel each scored a team-high seven points to lead Whitehall to a 25-24 nonleague win over Northwestern.

Leighanna Lister scored a game-high 10 points for the Tigers in both teams’ season opener. Sydney Sevrain scored eight points the Tigers.

The Zephyrs led by five at halftime, but Northwestern trimmed the lead to 18-17 after three low-scoring quarters. Rummel, Ariana Hines and Alix Buskirk scored two points apiece in the fourth quarter for Whitehall.

In the JV game, Whitehall earned a 43-34 victory.

NORTHWESTERN

Dieruff-Salisbury

The Falcons beat the Huskies 43-31.

Salisbury senior Caylin Meikrantz scored a game-high 22 points, while teammate Sarah McGee had 12 for the Falcons in the nonleague season opener.

Dieruff was led by Makenzi Rupp with 16 points.

Catasauqua-East Stroudsburg South

The Rough Riders beat the Cavaliers 49-44 in the opening game of Tamaqua High School’s Tip Off Tournament.

Giah Moore scored a game-high 17 points for Catasauqua, while teammate MaKenzie Bradley had 16 points to account for a large chunk of the Roughies’ scoring.

Imani Albert had 14 points for East Stroudsburg South, which went 4-for-23 from the foul line and 1-for-6 from the stripe in the fourth quarter.

The Roughies hit four of their five free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

CATASAUQUA

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nazareth-Catasauqua

Despite a game-high 31 points from Isaiah Graves, the Rough Riders fells to the Blue Eagles 55-50.

Nazareth was led by Kevin Wagner’s 26 points, which included five three-pointers.

Green made six treys in leading the Roughies in the nonleague season opener.

Salisbury-Blue Mountain

Jack Reichenbach scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Falcons to a 58-54 win over the Eagles.

The Falcons had four players with 12 or more as Ryan Slutsky, Jaxon Costello and Eric Frankenfield scored 12 points each in the nonleague opener in Orwigsburg.
