Racers scamper up the trail at Nature Center

Eighty people were preregistered for the recent More or Less 10K race and 2 mile Scamper at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center.

They each received a water bottle to prevent the need for water stops with the paper cups ultimately being disposed of along the trail outside Slatington.

Race director Michael Martinez commented on having the largest number of people to ever participate in the race.

“We are concentrating on growing the event,” Martinez said.

“We moved the date to November to help.”

Before the race, many of the racers found their way into the Great Room at the Nature Center where an art display was set up.

Ed Eppler of Bethlehem and Emma Martinez of Palmerton won the Scamper.

Martinez told the racers for the 10K there were plenty of volunteers to keep runners on the mountain trail.

“There is a lot of different terrain and you’ll never run the same place twice,” he said.

“Nobody told me there would be hills,” Greg Gallerizzo of Wilkes Barre replied.

Martinez makes a challenge in every race he directs by saying if the winner can run faster than he can on the trail, he will take him or her out to lunch, which he did.

First place winners were: Jacob Martinez, 18 and under; Alexandra Sodl and Marc Williamson, 19-29 age group; Christi Farr and Greg Gallerizzo, 30-39 age group; Debbie Lennox and Guy DeBruyn, 40-49 age group; Diana O’Brian and Ray Szeznecki; 50-59 age group; and Lee Zink, 60 and up. There were no female entries in the 18 and under and 60 and over classes.
