Gun club hosts Steel Challenge

The Steel Challenge Shooting Association’s East Coast Championship recently took place at Guthsville Rod and Gun Club, Orefield.

The event was the largest Steel Challenge match in the world with competitors from 19 states and even an international competitor from Austria.

The targets are steel plates including 10- and 12-inch circles and 18-inch by 24-inch rectangles supported by stands that allow the plates to swing when hit.

This action deflects bullets downward and away from the shooting positions.

There were eight stations, each containing five steel plates of various sizes and distances.

The object was to shoot the plates in the shortest time possible.

An electronic timer recorded the report of the weapon and shows the total time down to 1/100th second.

The best shooters can hit all five targets from a draw in less than three seconds.

Hamburg’s Doug Koenig is a World Champion in multiple practical pistol competitions and record holder.

He was the top shot at the Guthsville match.
