School board approves feasibility study

Whitehall-Coplay School Board approved a districtwide facilities feasibility study at its meeting Monday night. The approved study will be conducted with Breslin Ridyard Fadero Architects at a cost of $72,500.

After the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Lorie D. Hackett told The Press, “The study will look at an overview of projected enrollment and look at the facilities.”

According to Hackett, the study will let the district know if it has to add classrooms or expand the campus.

It also will look at the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and see what the district has to improve.

The board approved an enrollment projection agreement with DecisionInsite Enrollment Impact Specialists at a cost of $7,538, but the agreement is subject to Solicitor Jeffrey Sultanik’s approval.

In other business, Whitehall-Coplay Middle School Principal Pete Bugbee spoke about the mock election held at the building.

Bugbee said with the students’ votes, Hillary Clinton and Katie McGinty won by a 2-to-1 margin.

“The election results allowed us to teach the students about civics,” he said. “Not gloating about your candidate winning but not moping when yours lost.”

School board Treasurer William Leiner Jr. asked Bugbee if civics was taught at the middle school. Bugbee said social studies was a major subject for the age group and civics was a part of that.

Leiner spoke about the latest election and of meeting people who did not know the three major branches of the government.

“It’s so important,” Leiner said. “All the subjects are important, but it’s important to know about our government.”

Leiner spoke about the government being dysfunctional and of seniors taking a test on American government, one similar to what immigrants take to gain citizenship.

“I’m going to talk to whoever I can to get seniors to take this test,” he said.
