Runners, walkers participate in Rotary fundraiser to combat polio

The Yvette M. Palmer Purple Pinkie 5K Run and 1K Walk with 90 runners and walkers took off from the starting line Oct. 22 at Lehigh Carbon Community College, Schnecksville.

Organized by the Allentown West Rotary Club Chairman Herb Klotz, the fundraiser included support from 29 other Rotary clubs and participants.

Male and female winners included:

·First place male: Kyle Bellhorn, of Germansville, with a time of 22:34; and

·First place female: Jennifer Wollenhaupt, of Allentown, with a time of 23:47.

The Rotary district- wide 5K Race and Walk raised more than $15,000 to help the Polio Plus Fund for Rotary to eradicate polio.

The event also had support from 12 Parkland High School Interact students as well as several polio survivors who raised an additional $2,000 in donations.

The total amount raised will be tripled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
