The Catasauqua High School Roughies Marching Band may be small in number, but they are mighty in spirit.
The band on Oct. 1 placed first in its division (39 members or less) during the Cavalcade of Bands competition held at West Chester East Senior High School. CHS competed against two other high school bands.
CHS music teacher and band director Robert Arnold noted a total of four divisions participated in the competition.
Arnold said the band performed well, scoring 73.55 points.
“There were drastic improvements throughout our show, and in my opinion we are getting better with every performance,” he said.
The band also came in first place at an Oct. 15 competition at Upper Moreland High School, Willow Grove, with a score of 76.45.
Arnold said the band’s theme for this year is “Space - Exploring the Unknown.” During the competition, three major songs were performed by the Roughies band, including “Fanfare for the Third Planet,” “Into the Light” and “Distorte.”
