George Wolf students have fun with words

On Oct. 28, with a 48-degree temperature and whipping winds, parents waited with enthusiasm to see their children parade outside George Wolf Elementary School in Bath. But before the students could parade outside the school into the gymnasium to receive awards, they first showed off their costumes to three judges in the school hallway entrance.

This was no ordinary parade. This was the school’s Vocabulary Parade, where students dressed as a specific vocabulary word.

The guest judges were B104 deejay Stephanie Wells, Bath Borough Mayor Fiorella Mirabito and state Rep. Marcia Hahn, R-138th. They evaluated the words and costumes of kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

The Vocabulary Parade’s first two years were spearheaded by teacher Wendy Clemons and organized by Mel Jacobson. Now on its third year, the event is coordinated by reading instruction support teacher Dana Werkheiser.

The Vocabulary Parade’s purpose, according to Werkheiser, is “for students to be creative and have fun with words.”

She said the Vocabulary Parade “teaches students to see how words work in complex ways and not just talk about them.”

Winners (listed below, along with the vocabulary word they dressed as) received books, crossword puzzles, a George Wolf Elementary T-shirt and King Kone gift certificates.
