Catty powder puff team beats Kids
Despite being outnumbered 57-22 in the amount of players, the Catasauqua powder puff football team dominated Northampton at their annual meeting by a score of 24-0.
Jordan Wasser, Selena Safadi, Kenzie Bradley, Katelin Gillespie, Jess Hanna, Hanasia Jenkins, Bekkah Harakal, Emonnee Johnson, Alyssa Rushatz, Tatchiana Woods, Jade Biviano, Tyra Brown, Maddie Emery, Danielle Pluchinsky, Kayla Binder, Alexis Pursell, Roxanne Rossi, Hannah Greenberg, Allyson Kovach, Jackie Garner, Sofia Alquirih, and Shannon Gallagher round off the winning squad.
It was the night of the supermoon at Lou Wolf Field inside Northampton School District’s Al Erdosy Stadium, and the crowd was fired up as the Catasauqua Lady Roughies stormed over a sign that stated “Knock Down Northampton! 2016 Powder Puff.”
The game has become a tradition over the years in the lead up to the Northampton versus Catasauqua Thanksgiving Day classic, and this year was no different for the Lady Roughies when it came to the game day preparation.
“For the girls this is a really big thing,” said powder puff head coach Steve Bradley. “They take it very seriously. We started meeting a month and a half ago to teach them how to play correctly and to find out who was the most skilled for what role. Everybody contributed and it really showed under the lights.”
Catasauqua gained an early lead with 6:20 left in the first quarter. Garner caught one of the few passes on the evening during a 4th-and-12 down the sidelines to set up a 1st-and-goal, which lead to a Kenzie Bradley touchdown.
From there the Lady Roughies never looked back, dominating Northampton on both sides of the ball. The team ending up scoring two more touchdowns to go along with a Harakal field goal before the end of regulation.
Coach Bradley was very proud of the effort put in by the girls.
“They don’t wear pads and even though it’s flag football things get intense. One of our girls rolled her ankle fairly badly at one point. I saw it swell up but she didn’t want to quit. We taped it up and she went back in to help us seal the victory. Its stuff like that makes it all worth while.”
The game’s efforts went to help fund the Northampton National Honor Society and grew a decent crowd of fans, family, classmates, and yes, male cheerleaders.
Sadly technical difficulties were to blame for the Catasauqua male cheerleader team’s halftime show performance being cut short. But technical difficulties will not be in the way when the Rough Riders take on the Konkrete Kids on Thanksgiving Day, 10 a.m. at Catasauqua High School.
Tickets are on sale now at either school’s athletic department.
