Tables to be provided for ‘Night’

In the Night in the Country report, Kathy Hermany had some good news for the Northwestern Recreation Commission at the Oct. 26 meeting.

New tables are needed for the Chinese auction and steps had been taken toward pricing them.

But the New Tripoli Fire Company said Night could use tables from the social hall.

The auction and the cow flop were the two big money makers for Night in the Country.

Hermany said the final totals may show a slight increase over past years.

The portable toilets cost more but most expenses were the same.

She said Mertz Signs did not turn in a bill for the banner it printed, and wondered if it may be a donation.

Next year’s Night in the Country is scheduled for Aug. 19. The recreation fields will be closed Aug. 16-18 and 21 for all events.

In other matters, the annual school bonfire was added to the August rhythm, a list that maintains monthly items to be done.

The August listing will be used to remind the school a use request has to be in by the September meeting.

David Freeman of the Northwestern Youth Athletic Association said he expects to become the baseball director in the new year.

He was at the recreation commission meeting to ask about putting a batting cage between fields 5 and 6.

Rec Commission President Don Link said the idea has been discussed.

Americans with Disabilities Act regulations have to be included in the planning.

Link said permits will be needed from Heidelberg Township and will have to include Uniform Construction Code regulations and by whom and how it will be built.

Jim Hughes, maintenance, will do repair work on some of the cages.

Link said a gate is needed for people where the cars go into the field for Night in the Country.

Presently, there are vehicles and pedestrians using the gate at the same time.

Hughes will do fence repair but needs $620 in supplies. He said a new cabinet is needed at the Lions pavilion.

People are using the pavilion as a bathroom.

Freeman suggested a trail camera be installed that uses infrared so anyone caught by the camera cannot tell where it is set up.

He also said Hughes does a good job on the fields. There is still a drainage problem on one field although drainage issues are discussed with every spring walk-around.

Solicitors from the Steckel and Stopp law firm, Slatington, want to attend a meeting. A letter will be sent thanking them for a donation.

There was talk about the size of the field at Weisenberg.

It will have a 270-foot outfield, said Linda Gorgas, Weisenberg representative. Volunteers are needed to pick rocks from the fields.

Justin Smith, the Lynn representative, said a bridge will be built from the bandshell area of Ontelaunee Park across the creek to the dog park.
