Whitehall-Coplay School Board looked at its timeline to complete the budget for the 2017-18 school year at its committee meetings Oct. 24. Business Manager Michael Malay presented the timeline to the board.

The district will present the preliminary budget at the Dec. 19 committee meeting.

“We may be able to do that in November,” Malay said.

The board will adopt the preliminary budget or adopt a resolution to stay below adjusted index Jan. 9 or 23, 2017.

Malay presented the Act 1 tax index for 2017-18 with a base index of 2.5 percent, as opposed to 2.4 percent from the previous year. The district’s adjusted index is 3.3 percent, as opposed to 3.1 percent from the previous year.

Pennsylvania Department of Education’s deadline to adopt the preliminary budget is Feb. 15, 2017.

In other business, Assistant to the Superintendent Christopher Schiffert informed the board the district has created a Twitter account with the handle @WCSDZEPHYRS.

“We’ve encouraged each building to create an account,” he said, “but did not make it mandatory.”

The next board meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 14.
