D-11 titles clinched, others on the line; Football slate begins this weekend

On Wednesday, some District 11 titles were settled in the Lehigh Valley Press coverage area, while a few more are on the line Thursday night. In football, the action all gets under way this weekend.

In field hockey, the Emmaus Hornets did it again - their 28th straight district title after a 3-1 victory over Stroudsburg Wednesday night.

Meredith Sholder notched the first goal of the game with about two minutes left in the first half to break a scoreless tie. That score would hold up until halftime before the teams traded two quick goals to keep the Hornets up 2-1. Kacie Patton would score the insurance goal.

Chuck Hixson was there and will have more on the game in next week’s edition of the East Penn Press

In 2A action, Southern Lehigh beat Bangor and in 1A Moravian Academy topped Lehighton for titles.

In boys soccer, the Salisbury Falcons won an exciting 1-0 contest to capture the 2A title.

Ethan Heydt sent a cross that was headed in by Mason Groff in the second overtime to give the Falcons their first title since 2010.

Todd Kress was there and will have all the details in next week’s Salisbury Press.

The rest of the titles will be settled tonight. In 4A it’s another matchup between Parkland and Emmaus. The Hornets advanced as the fifth seed, upsetting the fourth-seeded Kids and the top seeded Mounties. Parkland is the second seed and knocked off Pleasant Valley before an epic rally to beat Liberty. That game will be 8 p.m. at J. Birney.

In 3A, the Tigers of Northwestern were the top seed and earned a bye before a 3-0 victory over the Spartans. In the finals, they will take on Central Catholic, which has outscored opponents 11-1 in their two districts games so far. This game is 7 p.m. at Emmaus.

In 1A, it’s Notre Dame East Stroudsburg against Moravian Academy.

In girls soccer, Parkland will take on Stroudsburg in the 4A battle at 6 p.m. at J. Birney. The Trojans were the top seed and haven’t allowed a goal so far in districts. The Mounties were seeded second and needed OT to knock off Whitehall 2-1 after a 1-0 win over Easton and a 2-1 win over Freedom.

In 3A, Blue Mountain defeated Central 3-1 for the title on Tuesday.

In 2A, Pine Grove beat Salisbury 1-0 for the title on Tuesday.

In 1A, it’s Minersville vs. Notre Dame Eastburg for the final.

District 11 football action kicks off this weekend with plenty of LVP teams in the mix. EPC champ and top seed in 6A, Emmaus, takes on an eighth-seeded Liberty team that was blown out by Freedom in their annual rivalry game.

Fifth seeded Freedom is coming off that huge win over their rival and travels to Stroudsburg to take on the fourth seeded Mounties. Parkland is the third seed coming off that heartbreaking loss to the Hornets. They will try to rebound and host Nazareth, the only team to beat Emmaus this season. Meanwhile seventh seeded Easton travels to Pleasant Valley.

In the 5A bracket, Whitehall hosts Eastburg North while Southern Lehigh hosts Eastburg South in two Friday games.

In 4A, Becahi travels to J. Birney once again looking for revenge in a rematch from last weekend where Central came away with a win. Pottsville is the two seed and hosts Saucon Valley.
