Nathan Gehringer, of Northampton, has completed the two-week Future Leader Camp (FLC) at Norwich University as a corporal.
FLC is designed to enable youth to become decisive, caring and disciplined leaders in a challenging environment and to instill confidence and courage through hands-on adventure, survival and physical training, while fostering moral integrity and character required of responsible citizens and future leaders.
Corporals are prior participants of FLC who are selected to return and assist the staff with logistical, operational, instructional and supervisory support. They assist the counselor instructors and ensure all equipment is present and ready for training.
They assist staff and participants as they rappel down the 80-foot cliff face at Deer Leap Mountain in Killington, Vt., and with other training events, such as paintball, an obstacle course, rope bridging, a compass course, survival skills training and more.
To qualify for the position of corporal, they must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.5, submit a letter of recommendation and state why they wish to return to serve the camp.
