Borough Elementary principal to retire
Longtime Northampton Area School District educator Carol Cunningham is retiring.
The NASD Board of Education voted 8-0, with one board vacancy, Oct. 25 to approve the administration’s recommendation to accept the resignation of Cunningham, Borough Elementary principal, in order for her to retire May 14, 2017.
School directors approved a paid leave of absence Jan. 3-March 17, 2017, and an unpaid leave of absence March 17-May 14, 2017, with insurance, for Cunningham because of “a serious health condition of a family member,” according to a statement on the school board agenda.
“I’d like to thank [Cunningham] for everything she’s done for the district, particularly leading the borough schools,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik said before the vote.
In other business at the Oct. 25 meeting, the board voted 8-0 to hire:
• Bradford Sell, PE At-Risk Student Program leader, Northampton Area High School, effective Jan. 3, 2017, or later, upon release from employer, not to exceed 60 days, at $59,105, with benefits;
• Julie Poniktera, short-term substitute English teacher, Northampton Area Middle School, through Nov. 4, at $125 per day, with no benefits, retroactive to Aug. 29;
• Laura Tominaj, TPE elementary teacher, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Oct. 25, at $47,720, with benefits;
• Mary Ann Weaver, special education instructional assistant, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Jan. 4, 2017, at $11.55 per hour, with benefits; and
• Heather Royer, special education instructional assistant, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Oct. 25 at $13 per hour, with benefits.
The board also voted 8-0 to approve:
• Resignations of Lindsay Hutterer-Gallagher, fall play business manager and spring musical business manager, effective Oct. 14, and Lauren MacCready, spring musical set design adviser, effective Oct. 18;
• Termination of Luz Boyer, a probationary employee, effective Oct. 24, for compensation, and Oct. 31, for benefits;
• Barbara Bleacher, paid leave of absence, Nov. 9, 2016-Jan. 26, 2017, and an unpaid leave of absence, Jan. 27-Feb. 9, 2017, with insurance;
• Richard Gladish, paid leave of absence, “for medical reasons,” as stated on the agenda, Oct. 21-31, and an unpaid leave of absence, Nov. 1-4, without insurance;
• Lacey Snyder, extension to her unpaid childrearing leave of absence through Nov. 4, with insurance;
• Athletic coaching staff member and stipend for the 2016-17 school year: Jalen Nichols, assistant girls basketball coach, $4,317;
• Michelle Newton and Paula Ulrich, co-advisers, Future Educators of America Club, Northampton Area High School, at $1,098.50 each for the 2016-17 school year;
• April Krempasky, to attend ACTFL Conference in Boston, Mass., Nov. 18-20, at a cost of $866;
• Michelle Schoeneberger to attend the 2016 Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association Conference in State College, Nov. 30, at a cost of $415.96; and
• Anita Mateyak and James Chuss to accompany 11 FBLA student members to the PA FBLA Leadership Workshop in Harrisburg, Nov. 6 and 7, at a cost of $403.67.
