Corn picker, firefighters prevent fire from damaging homes in Lower Macungie Township

Fire crews from Lower Macungie Fire Department were dispatched to a reported brush fire shortly after 1:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the area of 3400 Brookside Road, Lower Macungie Township. Crews found a large corn field on fire behind the Indian Creek Village mobile home park. The fire was being pushed by an easterly wind and was heading toward homes located along Watermill Drive from Sauerkraut Lane.

A corn picker was working in the fields and worked to cut fire breaks to help fire crews slow the advancing fire. The windswept fire eventually jumped Sauerkraut Lane and advanced east until fire crews were able to contain the blaze in that area.

Brush trucks and water tankers were dispatched from throughout the county, including units from as far away as Kutztown. Crews were on the scene for several hours working to contain the fire and extinguish hot spots.

Due to the quick response of fire crews, no homes were damaged by the fire and no injuries were reported.
