The Salisbury Township School District met Oct. 19 and honored some very deserving people during the meeting.

Jacob Glenister, Nathan Reed and Benjamin Wiener were recognized for being named 2017 National Merit Commended Students.

Nora E. Perron-Jones was recognized for her 28 years of service to the district. Perron-Jones retired as director of special education.

Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss wished Perron-Jones all the best.

“You will be missed. Thank you for your service.”

Board members continued their accolades for Perron-Jones.

“Thank you so much for all you’ve done for all of our kids at Salisbury,” Board President Frank Frankenfield said.

“Thank you to everyone,” Perron-Jones said. “I wanted to support teachers in their efforts. This board has always supported my efforts. It was a very gratifying position. I truly loved what I was able to do. We now have students included in many ways.”

Also honored were Paragon Transit bus drivers Cynthia Jackson and Stephen Greco, who are celebrating 10 years of driving with the district.

Paragon Transit owner Russ Leibensperger thanked the board for their continued support and said Paragon has upgraded the stop sign lights on each bus from flashing on the top and bottom with continual strobe lights to alert drivers to stop for students.

“Thank you for everything you do for Salisbury,” Frankenfield said.

In personnel news, Laura Nogueira has resigned as the assistant swimming coach effective Sept. 12.

William Brackett was approved for a new salary and job description for the director of facilities, safety and security.

Randall Lapp was approved as a part-time cafeteria helper at Salisbury High School. Natasha Charles was approved as a part-time cafeteria helper at Salisbury Middle School. Jodi Bilger was approved as a part-time cafeteria helper at Harry S Truman Elementary School. Donna Ritter was approved as a part-time library instructional assistant at SHS. Heidi Hochstetler was approved as a part-time intervention instructional assistant at HST.

Three policies were adopted: Policy 2.4.4 - Residency and Eligibility of Non-Resident Students; Policy 3.4.2 - Gifted Education and Policy 9.7 - Crowdfunding.

Board member Samuel DeFrank provided a report on Lehigh Carbon Community College which has seen a 43 percent increase. DeFrank said the school is now serving 400 veterans.

DeFrank talked about dual enrollment classes and asked why the district’s participation was low.

Salisbury High School Principal Heather Morningstar responded by saying there were many requirements with textbooks and teacher accreditation at the time she and then superintendent Robert Gross pursued dual enrollment with LCCC.

Seton Hall is offering three times the number of classes and the district found credits earned through Seton Hall are more widely accepted at other colleges.

“We found less than 50 percent of schools were accepting the LCCC credits,” Morningstar said.

Director Susan Lea reported on the Pennsylvania School Boards Association happenings. Currently there is a charter school reform bill which PSBA is against. Lea also reported a school district in western Pennsylvania has sued the government over the new transgender requirements. Lastly, Lea reported the school employees retirement system is estimated to be $1.7 trillion in debt.

During breakfast the inaugural Salisbury Township School District Alumni Wall of Honor Induction will also take place. The deadline for registration is Nov. 11.
