School Resource Office Richard Nothstein attended the Oct. 19 school board meeting to provide an annual report to board members on the police involvement for the 2015-2016 school year.

During that time, police responded to 265 calls for service, resulting in 63 arrests. Nothstein noted in the 2014-2015 school year, police responded to 281 calls with 43 arrests.

The types of calls handled by the school resource officer included alarms, assaults, assists, bullying, bus issues, welfare checks, child abuse, criminal mischief, crossing guard, custody issues, cyber bullying, damage to property, dances, disorderly conduct, disturbances, drug complaints, EMS, fire drills, found property, harassment and information.

Additional calls included Internet issues, vehicle lockouts, parking complaints, programs, residency checks, suspicious activity, theft, threats, tobacco violations, truancy and weapon offenses.

The arrests made involved assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, drugs, harassment, theft, tobacco and truancy.

Nothstein reported numerous residency checks were completed during the school year with findings reported back to the school administrators.

In addition, Nothstein said he attends numerous programs and events such as open houses, sporting events, K-9 demo, Homecoming parade, dodge ball event, car show, dances and coordination of a driving simulator program at the high school.

Nothstein also teaches a class “Intro to Emergency Services” for students interested in law enforcement. He noted as a result of the class, those students who attended have been certified in CPR.

Nothstein attends district safety, building safety and Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit meetings.

Ongoing training is also an integral part of Nothstein’s responsibilities as school resource officer.

Six Salisbury Township Police Department personnel have received ALICE training which is active shooter training which concentrates on Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Nothstein has also been involved with Civilian Response to Active Shooter training, planning and preparing for an active shooter, understanding/planning for school bombing incidents, active shooter forum and integrated public safety response to active shooter training.

For three years, Nothstein has attended the National Association of School Resource Officers conference which reviews bridging the gap in school safety, school safety and the courts, reunification, cyber safety, social media and sexting investigations.

Nothstein concluded his report by saying he is pleased with the great partnership between the police department and the district.

“Salisbury is well ahead of other districts in safety planning,” Nothstein said.

“Thank you for everything you do,” Board President Frank Frankenfield said. “Let Chief Stiles know we also believe we have a great partnership.”

District Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss agreed.

“We have a great relationship with the police department. It is a pleasure working with you as school resource officer,” Ziegenfuss said.
