LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

A resolution for land development approval for the Signature Personal Care facility was approved at the Oct. 20 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting. This facility will care for Alzheimer’s and other memory condition patients.

The Lower Macungie Elementary School will be razed with the cornerstone being salvaged and shared. The school has been on this lot for many years. The developer will work with the historical society regarding the school.

Commissioners Brian Higgins and Ronald Beitler both expressed disappointment about the sale of the school without knowledge of the school district’s intentions. Beitler said the playground is the only one in this area.

A resolution for land development and lot consolidation was approved for Spring Creek properties lot #9. The commissioners want to be assured tractor trailers do not make a right turn out of the new warehouse which will lead them to the center of Alburtis. Large signage will be posted.

In other business, Andy Hines, from Lutron, presented monetary donations for Lower Macungie Township Fire Department, Alburtis Fire Department and Macungie Ambulance Corps.

Michael James, from Troop 131, requested use of the township parking lot for the annual Scouting for Food. This event will take place Nov. 12. Commissioners approved the request.

Nathan Luey, a Boy Scout from Troop 71 in Macungie, attended the meeting to learn about community interests and concerns as part of badges he is working on for citizenship and local community.

The shredding event was well attended. Amounts are being tallied and will be available shortly.

An ordinance for basketball hoops in the right-of-way is being reviewed. New recycling containers are being considered.

The township’s playgrounds are being reviewed for possible improvement or elimination if rarely used.

The Cyclecross event is being held Dec. 11 at Camp Olympic.

Sara Pandl, director of planning, was named planner of the year at the American Planner’s Association Convention.
