Helmet Game concludes season for SHS football team

The District 11 Class 3A playoffs may officially be out of reach now as the Salisbury football team enters the final week of the regular season, but the Falcons still are playing for something in Week 10.

Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Salisbury (2-7) hosts Southern Lehigh (7-2), which has locked up a district playoff spot itself in the Class 5A ranks.

The Falcons’ task won’t be an easy one. The Spartans are on a four-game win streak, while the Falcons haven’t won since a 31-21 victory over Wilson on Sept. 10. Southern Lehigh’s two losses have come at the hands of Notre Dame (40-35) and Saucon Valley (26-21).

It may disappointing to Salisbury head coach Andy Cerco that his team won’t be reaching the postseason for the second straight season after winning two of its first three games. Salisbury had found an offensive groove early on with wins against Catasauqua and Wilson. But since then, injuries have been a big factor in the team’s downward spiral.

Still, there is plenty on the line when the two rivals square off on Saturday. The traditional helmet trophy is on the line once again after the Falcons retained it last year with a dramatic fourth-quarter win. There’s no question Southern Lehigh will have its eyes set on that prize Saturday afternoon.

Leading the Spartans’ offensive attack is quarterback Logan Edmond. He’s thrown for nearly 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns in 9 games.

Edmond can also get the job done on the ground. He’s rushed for two more scores, but the real cause for concern on the ground is tailback Luke Strauss. Strauss has a team-high 1,003 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on just 93 carries. His teammate Zach Mohr has added 506 and six scores on the ground, while Tim Walter has accumulated nearly 400 more through the hash marks and another three touchdowns.

When the Spartans do toss the ball around, Walter has been the main beneficiary with 42 catches for 619 yards and eight of Edmond’s 13 touchdowns through the air. Logan Hantz (23 catches for 252 yards and two scores) and Eli Price (15 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns) are second and third on the team, respectively, in receiving.
