Following an impressive 2-1 start to the season, the landslide on the football field continues for the struggling Salisbury Falcons.
Salisbury captured its last win back on Sept. 10, a 31-21 road win over Wilson. Five straight losses for Salisbury has the team searching for answers with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The Falcons hope some of those answers can come to light on Friday night at Palmerton High School.
Palmerton (3-5), while just one game above the Falcons (2-6) in the win column, has come on strong after losing its first three games. The Blue Bombers downed Pen Argyl, a team that recently handed Notre Dame (Green Pond) its only loss of the season, in Week 4 to get rolling. Their most recent victory came last week by way of a 46-6 drubbing of Catasauqua.
The Blue Bomber offense can hurt opposing defenses both through the air and on the ground with its stellar ground game led by head coach Chris Walkowiak.
Mike Stasko leads the Blue Bombers as a dual threat out of the backfield. As the team’s primary ball-carrier, he’s accumulated 401 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. But Salisbury’s defense has to be just as cautious of Stasko pouring in big plays as a receiver. The senior leads Palmerton in catches (31), receiving yards (500) and touchdowns (7).
The term dual threat might be the motto of the Blue Bombers, just as it is for many teams around the Lehigh Valley. Quarterback Garrett Perschy has completed 91 of 158 passes for 1,272 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s added 221 yards and four more scores on the ground to bring his total yardage from scrimmage to just under 1,500.
Salisbury’s offense, meanwhile, has struggled to score in recent weeks. Last week’s 28-0 loss to Northern Lehigh was its second shutout in four weeks. And since scoring 31 points in back-to-back weeks against Wilson and Bangor early in the season, the Falcons have averaged just under seven points per contest in its last four.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night.
