Boys soccer wins season finale

The Salisbury boys soccer team (10-0-2 Colonial League) was neck-and-neck with Northwestern (11-0-1 CL) for the top seed in the Colonial League all season, and fell just one win shy of winning the regular season title.

But the Falcons had their eyes set on finishing the season strong before making a playoff run.

They accomplished that goal with a 4-1 win last Thursday night against rival Southern Lehigh at Salisbury High School to end the season with three straight victories.

“Key win for us, key week in general for us,” said Allinson. “We beat Moravian Academy the week prior to stay undefeated. We knew Southern Lehigh was going to give us a good effort because of the rivalry. It was a typical game for these two teams, until our boys decided to up their games in the second half.”

The Falcons made quick work of the Spartans (6-5-1 CL), scoring two goals in the first 30 minutes, and then added two more in succession in the second half.

Salisbury’s opening goal came off the foot of a Southern Lehigh defender and landed in their own net. But the rest of the way, Salisbury’s scorers padded the lead.

The Spartans made it 2-1 early in the first half on a goal by Colin Hoff.

For Salisbury, Ethan Heydt tallied two goals and James Hadinger had the other one, and the Falcons, besides giving up a second half goal, prevented any real scoring threats from Southern Lehigh.

“We have 11 shutouts,” said Allinson. “I can’t remember a team that has been this strong defensively in keeping the ball out of the net. They’ve been the rock for us, and our backbone. The kids accept their roles and are taking merit and pride of what has to get done to be successful. I’m proud of them for what they’ve done so far.”

Heydt, Patrick Adams, and Mason Groff all had an assist in the win. Goalie Tyler Keller made five saves.

Salisbury moves on to the Colonial League tournament as the number two seed and will face the three seed Saucon Valley, a team that they tied 2-2 back on October 4. That game was played Tuesday evening, after Press deadline.

“They’re a dangerous team,” said Allinson. “At this time of year, everyone is a dangerous team. They’re very well organized, and have a similar system to what we run.

“There are some players that can beat you on the ball and off the ball. It’s going to be a challenge for us, but I like our chances against them. We played down a man because of yellow cards last time. At full strength, I think we can give them a game.”
