Sheckler students raise funds for playground

Two Sheckler Elementary School students recently decided to do their part to raise money for new playground equipment.

Fourth-grade students Cody Kurczeski and Nicholas Stem approached the Sheckler administration last month, requesting approval to set up a lemonade stand during the school’s meet the teacher night Sept. 15.

Cody told The Press he and Nicholas saw an announcement that Home and School Association was trying to raise funds.

“We decided to help in another way,” Cody said.

Nicholas said they decided to set up the lemonade stand to raise money because the current playground “is getting rusty.”

According to Catasauqua High School student Hannah Kurczeski, Cody’s sister, both Sheckler students planned and initiated the lemonade fundraiser on their own.

“We’re all very proud of them,” she said.

Sheckler Principal Eric Dauberman noted the students ran and managed the lemonade stand throughout the school event.

“They were both very proud of their efforts and so was I,” Dauberman said.

Sheckler Assistant Principal Ron DeMaio agreed.

“These two young men showed great initiative and school spirit by coming up with this idea for a lemonade stand,” he said. “We are very proud of their dedication and thoughtfulness for our school.”

Cody and Nicholas hope to raise money again in the future, in some capacity.

According to Cody, he and Nicholas are not yet certain when they will conduct another fundraiser.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Cody said.

Dauberman said the Home and School Association plans to raise money for the new playground through the Cherrydale fundraiser this year.

DeMaio said a new playground is needed as the current structure is 25 years old.

He also said the Home and School Association and the Catasauqua Area School District will be working in tandem to pay for the cost of the new playground.

New playground structures, he said, start in the mid-$40,000 price range.

“We will gladly accept any donations from the community to help defray the cost of the new playground system,” he said.

According to the Sheckler Elementary School Facebook page, Cody and Nicholas raised $107 with the lemonade stand fundraiser. That’s a lot of lemonade.
