NASD will offer English classes to adult residents
A program to teach English to adults is being offered to Northampton Area School District residents.
“Embracing English for Adults,” a Title III program, will be held Oct. 12-Dec. 7 at Northampton Area High School. Parents may attend at no cost.
Also, according to the NASD administration, there is no cost to the district for providing the instruction to parents.
Staff members, who will be paid with Title III funds at no cost to the district, are ESL instructors Paula Ulrich, Allison Knerr and Christine Nemeh.
The NASD Board of Education voted 8-0, with one school director absent at the Sept. 26 meeting, to approve the program.
Also, at the Sept. 26 meeting, school directors voted 8-0 to hire:
• Cullen Mentzell, head varsity swim coach, at $7,872.30, effective Sept. 27;
• Rebecca Licini, special education instructional assistant, Moore Elementary School, effective Sept. 27, at $11.55 per hour, with benefits;
• Janet Colburn, short-term substitute special education teacher, Siegfried Elementary School, Oct. 3-Dec. 23, at a daily rate of $125, with no benefits;
• Kelly Kauffman, 10-month Northampton Area High School attendance secretary, effective Oct. 3, at $16.44 per hour, with benefits; and
• Maria Martuscelli, NASD floating custodian, effective retroactive to Sept. 19, at $18.83 per hour, with benefits.
School directors voted 8-0 to approve:
• Voluntary transfer of Jennifer Nixon from special education instructional assistant, Moore Elementary School, to special education instructional assistant, Lehigh Elementary School, effective Sept. 27, with no change in salary and to be paid from Access Monies;
• Robin Zamadics, paid leave of absence, Sept. 13-Dec. 23, and unpaid leave, with benefits, as of Dec. 23;
• Stephanie Maurer, paid childbearing-childrearing leave of absence, Aug. 22-Sept. 30, and an unpaid childrearing leave, with insurance, Oct. 3-7;
• Angela Kohrt, paid childbearing leave of absence, Nov. 24-Jan. 4, and an unpaid childrearing leave, with insurance waived, Jan. 5-Feb. 24;
• Professional teaching staff employees as potential homebound instructors, effective Sept. 19 through the last day of 2016-17 school year at hourly rates of: $45.69 per hour for a bachelor’s degree and $50.15 per hour for a master’s degree;
• Two 1-1 instructional assistant positions for the 2016-17 school year, with salary and benefits to be paid through Access Monies;
• East Stroudsburg University Memorandum of Understanding regarding Pre-K-12 Educator Tuition Program for direct billing to staff tuition for pre-approved coursework;
• Instructional assistants with teaching certificates as substitute teachers for the 2016-17 school year;
• Additions and deletions to the substitute listing for the 2016-17 school year;
• Revised mentor-inductee list for the 2016-17 school year, including the mentors and stipend payment for the 2016-17 school year;
• Partial listing of coaches and advisers for their first half stipends of the 2016-17 school year;
• Addition to the athletic event staff for the 2016-17 school year: Jalen Nichols, ticket taker/ticket seller/game manager;
• Revised master district volunteer list for the 2016-17 school year;
• Donna Teklits to attend the Attendance-Child Accounting Professional Association annual conference, Nov. 2-4, at a cost to the district of $898;
• Terry Leh to attend the annual PASBO conference, March 21-24, 2017, Pittsburgh, at an approximate cost of $1,247; and
• Charles Longacre to attend 2016 PAGE conference, November 17 and 18, at a cost of $343.15.
