Livestock take home the bucks for 4-H members at competition

The Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Round-Up and Sale was held at the 2016 Great Allentown Fair.

The 4-H members competed throughout the fair week to earn honors as the champion of their species and then sold their 4-H market project at the end of the week.

Thirty-two market animals were sold bringing in over $28,000. Market hogs averaged $1.50 a pound.

Riley Nyce’s grand champion was purchased by Springfield Meats.

The reserve champion, owned by Ryan Haas, was purchased by Haas Farms and Hartman’s Butcher Shop.

The grand champion market steer, raised by Adam Dietrich, was sold to Hills Wildlife Taxidermy.

David Najarian Esq. won the bid for Tori Schiffert’s reserve champion market steer. The steers averaged $1.47 a pound.

Kevin Scanlon’s grand champion dairy beef and Bailey Vassallo’s reserve champion dairy beef were both sold to Fulton Bank.

The dairy beef animals averaged $1.34 a pound.

Olivia Geiger’s champion market goat was purchased by Victor Smith.

Hills Wildlife Taxidermy won the bid for the reserve champion market goat shown by Michael Majercak.

The average price for the market goats was $4 a pound.

The Showmanship Competition was a contest of the hard work prepping the animals training them to strut their stuff.

The grand champion market steer showman was Josh Dietrich while Sarah Smith was reserve champion.

Dairy beef showmanship honors went to Josh Dietrich as champion and Olivia Geiger as reserve champion.

Ashley Haas earned market swine showmanship recognition with Riley Nyce as reserve champion.

The champion showman for market goats was Olivia Geiger and Michael Majarcak was the reserve champion.

At the end of the week, Olivia Geiger topped the other youth at the rest of the Allentown Fair as Supreme Champion Showman.

The Grand Champion Market Hog raised by Riley Nyce of Germansville, sold for $525 to Springfield Meats on Sept. 3 at the 4-H Grand Champion auction at The Great Allentown Fair.PRESS PHOTOS BY C. RICHARD CHARTRAND
