Volunteer drivers are needed

CANCER

SOCIETY

One of the greatest challenges for cancer patients is a lack of transportation to get to lifesaving treatments. The American Cancer Society (ACS) needs the help of community volunteers.

In Northampton County and Lehigh Valley, many patients rely on the ACS’s Road To Recovery program in order to get to treatment.

At least 30 more volunteer drivers are needed, especially drivers who can take patients in Easton and surrounding areas in Northampton County and in the Allentown area.

Individuals who are interested in volunteering are invited to attend a meet-and-greet session where they will meet the ACS staff and talk to a dedicated road drivers.

The sessions are being held 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Oct. 6 and Oct. 13 at the ACS, 3893 Adler Place, Suite 170, Bethlehem. Light refreshments will be provided.

Call Stephanie Babinski, coordinator of office and event support, at 1-800-227-2345 to register to attend one of these sessions by Oct. 3 and Oct. 10 respectively. Or email an RSVP to stephanie.babinski@cancer.org.

Volunteer drivers must be between the ages of 18 and 84 years of age, have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, a good driving record, a reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and a clear background check.

Volunteers can drive their own vehicles or an ACS vehicle.

Rides for patients are usually provided 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Volunteers may select the days and times when they are able to drive. The schedule is flexible.

Volunteers also must participate in a short online orientation session. Orientation sessions, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., will be held on the days of the meet-and-greet sessions. Anyone who is unable to attend the meet-and-greet sessions, and who would like to learn how to become a volunteer road driver, may call 1-800-227-2345.
