Scout updates council
The Sept. 14 Alburtis Borough Council meeting featured a presentation by William Papp, of Boy Scout Troop 86 from Alburtis, regarding his work renovating a local hockey court.
The renovation of the court, located off Second Street in Alburtis, is Papp’s Eagle Scout project. Papp said he started the project early in August. He explained he and his volunteers did not get far on the first day and had to split into groups to work more effectively. Papp and his volunteers have made a lot of progress so far in September.
“We did the red line and are going to do the blue line, but we didn’t have the paint at the time,” Papp said.
Papp said part of his inspiration to choose the project was that his cousin Kyle was the one who had originally put the court in.
“The borough talked about painting the hockey court themselves. I looked at it and it looked like a good project,” Papp said.
Papp explained he hopes his Eagle Scout project encourages others to follow in his footsteps.
“You need to find a project that looks good and inspires someone else to do a project and get their Eagle,” Papp said.
The hockey court was dedicated to Althea and Jeannette Walbert Sept. 25, 2013.
Council Second Vice President Kathleen Raines discussed the need for a pair of new hockey goals. Raines said the present goals are well worn. She priced the new goals at a total of $300. The new goals were approved by the council and there were no objections.
Council President Ronald DeIaco and Executive Secretary Sharon Trexler discussed purchasing a new generator for Alburtis Borough Hall. Trexler and DeIaco found a generator for $38,000 compared to the average price of $50,000.
The council is still in the process of considering finding a replacement for the current generator instead of purchasing a new one. Trexler and DeIaco said the current generator was a solid machine originally added to the building after it opened.
According to Trexler and DeIaco, the generator was previously used and donated by the fire department.
“This could be a warming center for people to come during snow emergencies,” DeIaco said.
Council decided they want to keep looking and will look at the different options at the next meeting and begin the bidding process.
The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be held 7 p.m. Sept. 28 in Alburtis Borough Hall, 260 Franklin St., Alburtis.
