Halloween party for girls and their dads Oct. 8
There will be a father-daughter dance “Halloween Party” for girls enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Lower Macungie Community Center. The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the fire station at Sauerkraut Lane. There will be information on fire prevention, face painting, fire truck tours, Medevac helicopter tours, food and beverages.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center and Lower Macungie Township will hold a blood drive 4 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the community center. Pre-register by calling 610-966-6924 for an appointment.
The Ancient Oak Garage Sale will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 rain or shine.
The Ancient Oak hoagie sale will be held in October. For details, call Irene at 610-336-4115. Profits from the sale benefit the scholarship program.
The Ancient Oak Halloween house decorating contest with cash prizes will also be coming in October.
The next meeting of the Ancient Oak Women’s Organization will be 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at St. Paul’s UCC Church in Trexlertown. Bob Hollinger will talk about seniors’ self defense and give suggestions for facing difficult situations. All Ancient Oak ladies are welcome to attend the meeting.
The Lower Macungie Garden Club meets 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at the community center. Guests and new members are always welcome.
The Church of the Good Shepherd at 135 Quarry Road, Alburtis will hold a craft bazaar 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15. There will be crafts, a white elephant, gift basket auction, bake sale and food.
Curbside yard waste collection will be the week of Oct. 10 to 14 on the same day as trash collection. Containers/bundles should be placed separately at the curb on the regular collection day. Curbside leaf collection begins the week of Oct. 17 and continues through Nov. 25.
The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 11th Annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday through Nov. 30. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last 10 years, 903 boxes of donated items were sent to 110 soldiers.

The eighth annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the community center. Over 100 crafters and vendors will be participating. Brookside Deli will offer lunch for purchase 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A free shuttle from the parking lot to the door is available.
The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Oct. 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.
The community center offers a number of activities. Programs for the fall include ballroom dance classes, Zumba, guided meditation/relaxation, Tai Chi, chair yoga, card making classes, Pilates and Cize Live. Children’s programs include tennis lessons, art classes, Kindermusik and cooking classes.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.
The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 to discuss “The Nightingale” by Kristen Hannah. There will be a Chat & Chew book discussion group for students in grades four to eight 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Sept. 27. There will be a discussion of “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin and snacks.
There will be a family storytime for children of all ages 6:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3.
Lower Macungie Library will join libraries across the country in the first annual Indie Author Day Oct. 8. The Greater Lehigh Valley Writer’s Group will host a panel discussion on indie publishing and present a program on publishing in the 21st century. At 2 p.m. all participating libraries will come together for a Q & A webcast with writers, agents and industry leaders.
Creation Station will meet 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 15. Creation Station is in the children’s area and offers supplies for a special craft or activity as well as books with ideas to support the monthly theme.
The library offers “Book a Librarian” services for one-on-one help with using eReaders, downloading eBooks, tablets or computer programs such as Excel and Microsoft Word.
Class size is limited and registration is required for the above events.

The library is currently accepting book donations for the fall book sale. Textbooks, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, magazines, outdated medical or travel books or dirty or water damaged books will not be accepted. Sorting of books continues 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays.
The Friends of the Library wish to thank all who came out to support the recent book sale. Proceeds will go directly to the library. The next book sale will be Nov. 18 and 19 at the library.
