Ban of portable basketball hoops in right-of-way proposed

At the Sept. 1 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, several residents requested an ordinance banning portable basketball hoops in the right-of-way. Residents expressed their concern for the safety of the children playing at these hoops. It was noted at Heather Court, vehicles drive very fast in the area and when basketballs hit the hoop, the children run across the road without watching for cars.

Residents suggested the Church Lane Park is within minutes of the area and is much safer for children to play.

Sgt. Travis Kocher, with the Macungie Police Department, requested the use of area roads for the annual Halloween parade. This was approved but needs further approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation,

Lee Lichtenwalner, special project coordinator and a member of the pension committee and the wastewater advisory committee, has resigned. Lichtenwalner has been involved with the township for 29 years.

“He will be greatly missed. He can do just about anything,” Commissioner Brian Higgins said.

Speed bumps have been placed on Church Lane due to constant issues with the bridge. It was determined speed is a reason for damage to the bridge. The bumps are portable and can be removed which will be beneficial for plowing.

The resident of a property in the 2700 block of Mill Creek Road has a concern about selling the property as a portion of the property is part of the greenway paths. Solicitor Richard Somach told the resident to talk to her attorney and offered talk to her Realtor.

A resident from Lehigh Crossings expressed concern for speeding in the development. The commissioners said stop signs cannot be used as deterrents. The speed sign will be used to control the speeding. The state police will be notified. The township will also check to make sure there are an appropriate number of speed limit signs.

It was mentioned at the meeting the rain garden was not designed very well and not being cared for properly. The growth is unattractive and needs to be monitored. This will be checked.

Dustin Barnette was appointed to the parks and recreation board with a term to expire Dec. 31, 2020.

The adaptive signals on Hamilton Boulevard were to be made operational as of Sept. 12. If drivers have a green light at Minesite Road, they can get through to Krocks Road without a red light.

The widening of the Schoeneck Road intersection has begun.

A Girl Scout Silver Award project has begun with street addresses being painted in the Hills of Lockridge.

The next Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting will be held 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Lower Macungie Township municipal building, 3400 Brookside Road, Macungie.
