Laurys Station to celebrate community on Sept. 17
St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1415 Rising Sun Road, Laurys Station, begins the month with a chicken barbecue 4-6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 for eat in and until 7 p.m. for take out.
Menu includes half a chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, lettuce with bacon dressing, beverage and dessert.
There’s even a special meal for children featuring two drumsticks, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, cookie and beverage.
Sunday School resumes 9 a.m. Sept. 11 with classes for youngsters age 3 through sixth grade.
There are also classes for high schoolers and adults.
Worship services are at 10:15 a.m.
The sixth annual Laurys Station Community Day takes place 3 p.m. until fireworks at nightfall Sept. 17, at the Laurys Station Fire Company and North Whitehall athletic fields, 5314 Egypt Road.
For the first time ever, the event will feature a chili cook-off 4-6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the hottest chili, tastiest beef chili, and tastiest non-beef chili.
In addition, there will be a photo contest.
St. John’s will sell homemade funny cakes, shoofly pies and zucchini bread.
Woodside Avenue will supply musical entertainment from 5 p.m. to closing.
Other attractions include a car show, local history display, Boy Scout Troop 144 encampment and a car show.

Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, is staging a new festival, the Backyard BBQ Bash, in the grove at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
Lorah’s pig roasters and chicken dinners will supply the food.

All books are free.
