Welcome to new teachers, new PTO, PTA reps

Members of the Salisbury Township School District Board of Directors welcomed new teachers at the Aug. 17 board meeting.

The new teaching staff for the 2016-2017 school year includes Brenda Cherry, Spanish teacher, Salisbury High School; Freya de Conde, long-term substitute teacher for English, SHS; Vicky Evener, transitional learning support teacher, SHS; Amanda Holschwander, special education teacher, Salisbury Middle School; Sara Kimble, reading specialist teacher, Harry S Truman Elementary School and Stani Schiavone, mathematics teacher, SHS.

Also recognized were Rula Elian, Western Salisbury Elementary School PTA vice president and Jennifer Kelley, HST PTO president.

State Rep. Daniel McNeill, D-133rd, also attended the meeting to present House of Representatives citations to Mason Groff and John Yurconic, who won the PIAA CLass 2A boys double championship and state title in doubles.

Lastly the board acknowledged three retiring staffmembers at the meeting: Brian K. Covely, retiring custodian at SHS, with the district for over 23 years; Edward K. Nesfeder, retiring assistant to the director of facilities, with the district for over 33 years and Verna C. Schuon, retiring director of transportation, with the district for seven years.

Secretary of the board Robert Bruchak reported the state approved a budget and the district will receive $9,000 less than budgeted. Bruchak said the PlanCon construction reimbursement for the 2015-2016 school year is expected in the 2016-2017 school year. He said the board is not restricted as to where to use the reimbursement money.

In other business, the board approved the Seton Hall University project acceleration high school program agreement. Also approved was the agreement between the district and the Community Services for Children, Inc./Head Start of the Lehigh Valley through July 31, 2017.

An agreement was reached and approved between the district and the Lehigh Valley Steelers regarding facility usage during the 2016-2017 school year.

A stadium scoreboard sponsorship agreement was approved between the district and McClure Company expiring June 30, 2021.

Board President Frank Frankenfield thanked Director of Maintenance, Buildings and Grounds William Brackett and his staff for their work this summer in getting the district facilities ready for opening day. Director George Gatanis said the board recognizes the impact the summer projects has on the maintenance department during the summer months.

The Towson University Marching Band was approved to use the facilities at SMS Sept. 24 and 25 for rehearsal and overnight accommodations.

The board had a final reading and adopted the following policies at the meeting: Policy 2.2.2 - Drugs/Controlled substances, Policy 2.2.2 - Terroristic Threats/Acts; Policy 2.2.5 - Tobacco; Policy 2.2.6 - Care of school property; Policy 2.2.8 - Searches and seizures; Policy 2.2.9 - Supplemental discipline records; Policy 2.3.1 - Student assistance program; Policy 2.3.2 - Hazing; Policy 2.3.3 - Unlawful harassment; Policy 2.4.5 - Assignment with the district; Policy 2.4.6 - Classroom placement of twins/higher-order multiples; Policy 2.4.7 - Home education programs; Policy 2.4.8 - Homeless students; Policy 2.4.10 - Withdrawal from school; Policy 3.1.2 - Religious exemption from instruction and Policy 4.5.4 - volunteers.

Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss announced the Salisbury High School Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor applications will close Sept. 1.

The program is designed to recognize notable alumni who have brought honor to the Salisbury Township School District. The district is seeking nominees who have distinguished themselves and contributed to society in an exemplary manner. Awards will be given annually at Homecoming with the number of nominees inducted at the discretion of the selection committee.

To be considered for this honor, the candidate must be a graduate of Salisbury Township School District and at least 25 years old.

Nominees will be evaluated on the following criteria:

•A commitment to learning;

•Accomplishments in his or her chosen career;

•Accomplishments related to volunteer work/service to others;

•A positive impact on people or contributions to others; and

•Special recognition or awards.

The selection committee will be comprised of the following: the superintendent, the assistant superintendent, one member from the Salisbury Township School Board, one member from the Salisbury Township School District administration, one member from the Salisbury Educational Support Personnel Association, one member from the Salisbury Education Association and one member from the Salisbury community.

Inductees will have a plaque placed on the Alumni Wall of Honor located in the Salisbury Township School District Administration Building.

The next curriculumn and technology meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Aug. 29 in the administration building.

The next operations committee meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Sept. 7 in the administration building.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the administration building.
