Community Heroes celebrations Sept. 8
The Emmaus Library will host its annual Community Heroes celebration 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8. Come out and talk with the local firefighters, emergency medical technicians and police officers. The library parking lot will be blocked off so youngsters can explore the emergency vehicles. There will be a child ID event from Community Partners 4 Kids sponsored by Greg’s Auto & Tire of Emmaus. The rain date is Sept. 15.
The Emmaus Remembrance Garden will hold a Community Heroes brick installation ceremony one hour before the library celebration 5 p.m. Sept. 8. St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Sixth and Wood streets, will hold its annual Fall Fest Sept. 8 through 10. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 8 and 5 to 11 p.m. Sept. 9 and 10. There are two big tents this year. There is live entertainment every night and outside booths offering food choices. Ethnic food is served in the school cafeteria 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9. The Emmaus Rotary Club will hold its ninth annual golf tournament Sept. 12 at Brookside Country Club in Macungie. Registration begins 11 a.m. with a shotgun start 12:30 p.m. The event includes lunch on the course, hors d’oeuvres on the terrace, dinner, prizes, awards and a silent auction. The Emmaus Senior Citizens group meets 1 p.m. every Friday St. Matthew’s E.C. Church, Fifth and Ridge streets. All area senior citizens are welcome to attend. Halloween Parade volunteers are needed to help with the Oct. 15 Emmaus parade. Kathy Mintzer, who has chaired the parade committee for 20 years, writes she is in need of division captains. In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Emmaus Historical Society’s museum, the society will host an ice cream social 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 24 in the backyard of the museum, 218 Main St. The celebration will feature ice cream, cake, sundry refreshments and backyard games. The society will also debut its new Christmas ball of the historic museum building. The Emmaus Garden Club will host a garden tour 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10. The tour includes five gardens within a 35-minute walking distance. The Emmaus Garden club meets the first Tuesday at noon at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St. The program for the Sept. 6 meeting is “Awesome Armature Arrangements,” presented by Deborah Pomroy Moyer. Moyer will share her techniques for creating vertical or spiral structural frameworks to support floral designs. The club members invite non-members to join a community of active garden enthusiasts. Gardening experience is not necessary.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Sept. 6 and Sept. 19 at Emmaus Borough Hall, Fourth Street. Emmaus Borough offices will be closed Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday.
Refuse collection for the borough changes due to the holiday. Pick up will be Sept. 8 instead of Sept. 7. The hours for the compost center on Kline’s Lane change in September. Compost center hours Sept. 21 to Oct. 26 are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The 1803 House is hosting “A Very Merrie Halloween,” a family-oriented fall and Halloween festival and juried craft show 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 (rain or shine) on the grounds of the historic 1803 House, 55 S. Keystone Ave. Among the festival features are the Wildlands Conservancy staff with demonstrations of “not so scary” wild creatures and a kids’ tent with pumpkin decorating, crafts and a costumed Halloween parade. Congratulations to the GFWC PA Woman’s Club of Emmaus for being honored with two awards during the 2016 GFWC PA Convention. This may be the first time the Emmaus club received recognition at the international convention. The club recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.

The Shelter House Society is partnering with Hivel and Dahl to host an Oct. 16 Log Cabin Tour of the central section of the 100 log structures in Lehigh County. A light supper will be offered after the tour returns to the Shelter House. Dean Bortz, resident curator of the Shelter House, will lead tours through the Shelter House before and after the event.
