Plans for crosswalk to move forward

Plans for the Northwest Road crosswalk near the driving entrance to the rec fields can finally move forward as approval was received to reduce the speed limit to 35 mph, reported Steve Bachman, chair of the board of supervisors of Heidelberg Township and director of parks and recreation.

“Reducing the speed allows us to put in a mid-block cross walk,” said Bachman.

The cross walk has been in the works since 2014.

The next step is to check with PennDOT for approval and markings.

Mini-cell towers were also on the agenda as several rural townships develop ordinances to place limitations on their placement within the township.

Solicitor Keith Strohl presented supervisors with an ordinance for approval.

The ordinance will be sent to the zoning board for review.

“You essentially cannot do a blanket restriction, but can limit,” said Strohl.

Other surrounding townships are seeking to pass similar ordinances.

During the monthly reports, Administrator Janice Meyers noted the zoning office has been busy this year, issuing 20 permits.

Meyers also told the board, the township has applied for two grants to help with funding for township projects.

In the zoning report, big changes are expected in 2018 with regard to pollution reduction plans.

A round table meeting regarding MS4 (municipal separate storm sewer systems) was held with the Lehigh County Conservation District.

Public outreach and education were the goals of the meeting as small municipalities will soon be faced with changing criteria MS4 mapping.

In new business, an ordinance was approved vacating a section of Werleys Corner Road from Route 100 to the cul-de-sac.

The township was also presented with a new state and federal flag from state Rep. Gary Day’s office, R-187th.

Wes Schlauch, an intern with Day’s office, presented the flags along with words of appreciation from the representative for the “leaders and engaged citizens of the township.”
