Cring and Clazzy to perform at Jordan Lutheran Church

Jonathan Richard Cring and Janet Clazzy, dubbed recently as “the biggest two-piece band in America” will be performing Aug. 21 at Jordan Lutheran Church, 5103 Snowdrift Road, Orefield.

Cring and Clazzy will be sharing an entertaining and inspirational program called “567: Go Tell it from the Mount,” a modern-day look at The Sermon on the Mount, using music, stories and song.

They will also be presenting excerpts from Cring’s new book,” Within.”

“After traveling nearly 40 years all around this great country, I have been blessed to learn a lot about people, myself, history and God, which has been mingled with tons of humor and a whole lot of common sense,” Cring said.

The duo has been performing on the road for 20 years.

“The “567” is a program that unites the generations, closes the political gaps and gets us to laugh long enough that we stop fussing with each other,” said Clazzy, who performs on an instrument called the WX5 Wind Machine, a horn touting the sounds of 250 different instruments.

Clazzy, 63, was raised close to Knoxville.

She told The Press Aug. 15 during a telephone interview she has been playing music since she was 5.

“I got into music like most people do,” Clazzy said. “My parents had me take piano lessons.

“The only thing that makes me different is I stuck with it.”

“My first wind instrument was the saxophone. My band director switched me to oboe when I was a freshman in high school.”

Clazzy started playing the WX5 after playing the oboe with Cring.

They wanted to expand so they investigated the WX5.

“That horn was perfect for me, fingers like a saxophone and has 250 instruments in it.” she said.

Cring, 64, grew up near Columbus, Ohio.

He has been writing music since he was 12. His love of music began after hearing a gospel quartet at church.

“Instead of making him want to listen to music, it made him want to do it,” Clazzy said. “He grabbed some friends and starting making his own arrangements.”

Clazzy said she and Cring met when she was playing the oboe in an orchestra.

He had written a Broadway-style musical that came to Freeport, La., in 1982.

“A lot of my friends were in it,” she said. “I went to see it, introduced myself and volunteered because I was so impressed.”

They began working together in 1996 when she moved to Nashville and found out Cring and his family lived there, too.

Clazzy said Cring, who plays piano and sings, sings like John Denver and John Mayer.

“Jonathan is a great communicator,” she said.

Their show is a combination of Cring’s stories intertwined with gorgeous music and some singing and instrumentals.

“People will leave this program feeling energized,” she said.

They will perform during the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services on Aug. 21 at Jordan Lutheran Church, 5103 Snowdrift Road, Orefield.
